Medical expenses incurred by:

are usually paid by the GOVERNMENT.

If the “poor schmuck” can’t afford a bike helmet, there are charitable organizations which will assist.

There are many thing that drive up the cost of health insurance premiums. Illegal aliens, smokers, drunk drivers, drug addicts, extreme sports enthusiasts, etc.

But instead of doing something about any of those people, lets pick on the poor schmuck who’s riding to the store or work because his gas tank is empty and he can’t afford to fill it. I’m 37 and have NEVER worn a helmet on a bike. I’ve broken lots of other bones that a helmet never would protect. (used to do 20″ BMX freestyle back in the day).

This law is BS.

The assumption that drivers will pay attention to bikers wearing helmets is not true. The problem isn’t with bad bikers, it’s with bad drivers who don’t pay attention, speed in residential areas, and have a complete disregard for anyone but themselves or their cell phones.
Another point - is this just a ploy for the city to get more money in the coffers? Or, just another reason to try and imprison the vagrant population for meaningless outstanding tickets??

I sent a letter to Mayor Royce Pollard more than a week ago about this very same thing. I agree with you wholeheartedly, particularly concerning the all-ages part of this ordinance. While I always wear my helmet, I would certainly not enjoy being legally required to wear one, as this obviously puts many people off the whole idea of cycling before they even step onto a bike.

So much for civil liberties.

I don’t give a rat’s ass about the dummies who don’t wear helmets or seat belts!
However, their idiocy causes OUR auto & health insurance premiums to skyrocket!
Mandate the wearing of protective gear … please.
